BREAKING: Abdullah Ibrahim, 1934–2026. The father of Cape jazz and composer of “Mannenberg,” the unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid struggle, has died at 91. Born Dollar Brand in Cape Town, discovered by Duke Ellington, and hailed by Mandela as “South Africa’s Mozart,” Ibrahim played at the dawn of democracy in 1994.
