SA President Cyril Ramaphosa and USA President Donald Trump.

In a tense bilateral meeting, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa faced an unexpected ambush from US President Donald Trump, who claimed to have evidence of "White genocide" in South Africa.

Trump dimmed the lights in the Oval Office and played a nearly 5-minute video on screens, asserting it showed "Proof of Persecution in South Africa." The video was later posted on the White House X account.

Ramaphosa initially laughed, then looked visibly uncomfortable as the video played. When Ramaphosa asked where the footage was taken, Trump shook his head, saying he didn't know. Ramaphosa expressed surprise, stating, "I'd like to know where that is, because this, I've never seen." Trump simply replied, "It's in South Africa."

Despite the provocative presentation, Ramaphosa disputed Trump's claims of "White genocide" in South Africa, maintaining his composure throughout the meeting. When asked what he would like Ramaphosa to do about the video's content, Trump hesitated, saying, "I don't know." Trump then showcased a thick stack of articles allegedly backing up his claims, but Ramaphosa remained unfazed.

Trump's claims of "White genocide" in South Africa have been met with strong denial from the South African government. The controversy has been fueled by some members of Trump's administration, including South Africa-born adviser Elon Musk, who have accused the South African government of persecuting its white minority.

The meeting highlighted the complexities of international diplomacy, with both leaders navigating sensitive issues. Ramaphosa's calm demeanor and measured response reflected his commitment to maintaining a positive relationship with the US while defending South Africa's reputation.
