TZANEEN – The ANC in Limpopo has welcomed the appointment of Odas Ngobeni as the new Mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, describing the transition as a step toward strengthened stability and service delivery in the municipality.

Provincial spokesperson Tonny Rachoene confirmed the party’s position following a special council sitting on Monday, 25 May, where former Mayor Gerson Molapisane was removed from office through a motion of no confidence. Molapisane will remain in council as a PR councillor.

The motion against Molapisane was tabled, moved, seconded, and adopted without objection from councillors present. With that vote, he was immediately stripped of his positions as Mayor and as a member of the Mayoral Committee.

Council moved swiftly to fill the vacancy.

Ngobeni was appointed to the Executive Committee, sworn in as a member, and moments later took the oath of office as Mayor. The oath was administered by Magistrate Mphaho.

In his first act as mayor, Ngobeni pledged to uphold the Constitution and carry out his duties “faithfully and to the best of my ability.”

The leadership change closed with a symbolic handshake between the outgoing and incoming mayors, who then exchanged seats in the council chambers – a quiet but clear signal of a peaceful transition.

Molapisane’s removal ends his tenure as mayor, but his continued presence as a PR councillor means he retains a seat at the council table.
