In a ceremony held today, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane was sworn in as a Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, replacing Ms Mary Morongwe Phadi of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP).

The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by Speaker Makhosazane Masilela, who congratulated Mkhwebane on her appointment.

Mkhwebane's appointment comes amidst a tumultuous period for the MKP, with reports of widespread dismissals and leadership changes across various provinces and regions.

While many have been watching the exodus of leadership from the party, it appears that the focus has now shifted to the provincial legislature, with Mkhwebane's appointment marking a significant development.

Mkhwebane took an oath of office, committing to uphold the Constitution and serve Mpumalanga with integrity, honesty, and dedication. "I swear to be faithful to the Republic of South Africa and to obey, respect, and uphold the Constitution and all other laws of the Republic," Mkhwebane said.

In her remarks, Mkhwebane expressed appreciation for the responsibility entrusted to her and affirmed her commitment to contributing to the Legislature's work and advancing provincial residents' interests. "I am honored to be given this opportunity to serve the people of Mpumalanga. I promise to work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of our communities are heard and that their needs are met," she said.

Speaker Masilela emphasized the importance of ethical leadership and service delivery, urging Mkhwebane to work diligently in her new role. "We expect you to uphold the highest standards of integrity and to serve the people of Mpumalanga with dedication and commitment," Masilela said.

As Mkhwebane embarks on her new role, she has pledged to work closely with her colleagues to ensure that the Legislature serves the best interests of the province and its people. "I look forward to working with my fellow members to build a better future for Mpumalanga," she said.

The development comes as the MKP grapples with internal strife, with several high-profile members having recently left the party. Mkhwebane's appointment is seen as a significant coup for the provincial legislature, and her experience as a legal professional is expected to bring much-needed expertise to the table.
