The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) raided businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela’s luxury Sandhurst mansion on October 9, 2025, in a major escalation of the R2.3 billion Tembisa Hospital fraud investigation.

A convoy of dozens of police vehicles and removal trucks entered the lavish home, as part of a court-ordered asset recovery operation.

Maumela, alleged nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa through a prior marriage, heads the Maumela Syndicate accused of siphoning R816 million via rigged PPE and infrastructure tenders, according to the SIU’s September 2025 report.

His assets—worth R520 million, including a R75 million Bantry Bay home and four Lamborghinis—are subject to freezing orders totaling R326 million. He was arrested in August on fraud and money laundering charges.

The SIU’s investigation uncovered three main syndicates involved in the alleged looting, with the Maumela Syndicate being one of them. The unit identified "countless procurement irregularities and fraud" in the tender processes, with funds meant for healthcare being diverted through complex money laundering schemes.

The raid is part of a broader crackdown on corruption, as the SIU continues to trace assets and unravel the complex web of fraud involving senior officials at the Gauteng Department of Health and Tembisa Hospital. The SIU has successfully preserved several assets linked to the syndicate, including luxury vehicles and prime real estate across multiple provinces.

This development comes after the SIU released an interim report highlighting the extent of corruption at Tembisa Hospital, which led to the assassination of whistle-blower Babita Deokaran in August 2021. The report sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability in governance.

The SIU’s operation is ongoing, with further updates expected once legal processes are complete. The unit is committed to recovering stolen public funds and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
