The African National Congress (ANC) is taking disciplinary action against two of its senior members, Malusi Gigaba and Senzo Mchunu, over recent remarks that the party claims undermine its unity and operational integrity.
The decision was announced by ANC National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu, who stated that both Gigaba and Mchunu acted outside the party's structures, making statements that deliberately disparaged the ANC.
Gigaba had warned that "the ANC will be history" if it fails to secure victory in upcoming local government elections, expressing concern over internal divisions within the party. Mchunu, on the other hand, compared the ANC to "a person walking on the edge of a cliff," urging the party to regroup before it's too late.
The ANC has emphasized the importance of maintaining its integrity as a "revolutionary movement" operating under democratic centralism and internal discipline. Bhengu articulated that Gigaba and Mchunu's statements could discredit the party and create confusion among its ranks, saying, "Their statements sow discord and confusion and weaken the people's confidence in their movement."
The party has reiterated that it is the constitutional prerogative of the Secretary-General to govern internal communications and has resolved to address what it calls "a breach of established communication protocols." No one, the ANC says, will be exempt from accountability within the organization.
As the ANC navigates this internal controversy, the disciplinary action against Gigaba and Mchunu serves as a reminder of the party's commitment to upholding its principles and maintaining unity among its members.
