In the fading winter light on Tuesday, the ANCYL Limpopo leadership walked through the gates of the Mokaba family home in Polokwane. No microphones. No motorcade. Just jackets, berets, and the weight of a name that still shakes the province.

Provincial Secretary Cde Phineas Sebola led the delegation. With him was Peter Mokaba Regional Secretary Cde Percy Nchabeleng and members of the Polokwane Sub-Regional Task Team.

Their mission was simple: pay homage to the family of the late ANCYL President Peter Mokaba, and recommit to the legacy of servitude, bravery, and courage that defined his life. This was not just a courtesy visit. It was a political reckoning.

Inside the lounge, Sebola and Nchabeleng sat with the Mokaba family. Outside, young lions in Che Guevara hoodies and ANC jackets stood in quiet reflection. On the banner behind them, Mokaba’s face looked on. The red beret. The clenched fist. The unapologetic fire.

Sebola addressed the delegation and the family with open palms, a gesture of sincerity and submission to history. His message was clear: The ANCYL Limpopo remains committed to preserving President Peter Mokaba’s rich legacy.

Mokaba did not just lead the Youth League. He armed it with ideology. He gave it a voice that forced the nation to listen. From “Kill the Boer” to the frontlines of negotiations, he was contradiction and conviction in one body. He died in twenty-oh-two, but in Limpopo his shadow still organises branches.

The visit comes as the ANC prepares for the highly anticipated November local government elections. With the mother body under pressure in metros, the Youth League is being deployed to reconnect the movement to its militant roots.

Nchabeleng, who leads the region named after Mokaba himself, understands the symbolism. The Peter Mokaba Region is not just geography. It is a political statement. To visit the family is to touch the totem before battle.

The engagement ;also forms part of “preparatory efforts” to mobilise young voters and honour struggle veterans ahead of the campaign trail. The Youth League wants to remind Limpopo that the ANC’s soul was forged by people like Mokaba, and that the fight for economic freedom is unfinished.

The Mokaba family received the delegation with dignity. In the lounge, elders and youth sat together. No speeches for cameras. Just conversation, commitment, and the quiet acknowledgment that legacy is not inherited, it is earned.

For the ANCYL Limpopo, the visit closes a circle. You cannot claim Mokaba’s name in chants and not visit his home. You cannot wear the beret and ignore the bloodline. You cannot rebuild the ANC without making peace with the militants who built it.

As the sun set on Polokwane, the delegation left. No press conference. No communique.

The ANCYL Limpopo says it remains committed to preserving President Peter Mokaba’s rich legacy due to his long-standing servitude, bravery, and courage that greatly impacted the lives of the people and the liberation movement.

In an election year, that is not nostalgia. That is strategy.
