Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, head of SAPS Crime Intelligence, has fallen ill, forcing the Madlanga Commission to adjourn for the day.

Despite his absence, Khumalo's earlier testimony has sent shockwaves through the nation, exposing the notorious Big Five cartel's alleged involvement in drug trafficking, tender fraud, contract killings, and cross-border hijackings.

According to Khumalo, the cartel has infiltrated the political sphere, working with politicians for personal gain. "The Big Five has already penetrated the political arena, and there are documented cases of high-profile connections," Khumalo warned. The cartel reportedly recruits members based on expertise in specific illicit trades, forming compact syndicates of between 2 and 12 individuals.

Khumalo's testimony revealed a complex web of corruption, with WhatsApp messages retrieved from the phone of businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala pointing to systemic political interference in the South African Police Service (SAPS). The messages showed Matlala's associate, Brown Mogotsi, soliciting funds for African National Congress (ANC) events while promising influence over police investigations and tenders.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola assured the nation that Khumalo is in good spirits and receiving medical attention. The Madlanga Commission will continue to investigate these allegations once Khumalo is able to resume his testimony, with the nation eagerly awaiting the outcome.
