POLOKWANE, 25 June 2026 – The wheels of local government are turning with new purpose in Polokwane, and Executive Mayor Makoro John Mpe is at the helm of the reboot.

As the Polokwane Mayoral Committee meets today to deliberate on matters that will serve before the Municipal Council on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, Mpe’s administration is reinvigorating how the city makes decisions, insisting that governance is about scrutiny, not rubber-stamping.

Under Mayor Mpe, the message to residents is clear: Council resolutions are not made overnight. They travel through a rigorous, multi-layered process designed to ensure accountability, transparency, and sound governance before they ever reach the chamber.

Rome was not built in a day. Likewise, municipal decisions are not made overnight, the Municipality said. They are subjected to careful scrutiny at several levels before they are placed before elected representatives for consideration and approval.

The process starts at the Executive Management Committee, chaired by City Manager Thuso Nemugumoni, where senior officials interrogate reports for feasibility, legal compliance, and impact on service delivery.

From there, reports move to Portfolio Committees chaired by councillors across political parties. These committees provide political oversight on finance, water and sanitation, housing, local economic development, roads, community safety, and more. Each report faces robust engagement tied directly to sector needs.

Once vetted, reports reach the Mayoral Committee, chaired by Executive Mayor John Mpe. This is the strategic engine room of the municipality under Mpe’s administration, ensuring recommendations align with developmental priorities and the broader aspirations of Polokwane’s residents.

The final step is the Municipal Council, chaired by Speaker Kobela Wilhemina Modiba. As the highest decision-making structure, Council brings together Ward Councillors and PR Councillors from across 45 wards to debate, consider, and approve or reject reports based on their merits and alignment with community needs.

This layered governance process under Mayor Mpe demonstrates that municipal decisions are not the product of a single office or individual. They are the result of collective leadership, institutional checks and balances, professional administration, and democratic oversight.

In local government, every report tells a story, every discussion shapes a solution and every Council resolution becomes a building block in the ongoing effort to improve the lives of the people of Polokwane.
