Embattled PA leader Gayton McKenzie
Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has come out swinging against claims that his party is behind the delay in appointing a new Transport Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) in the City of Johannesburg.
According to McKenzie, the real culprits are the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who allegedly want the portfolio for themselves.
McKenzie is standing firm behind his choice, Liam Jacobs, a former MP and party newcomer, to take charge of the transport portfolio. Despite some disgruntled PA councillors feeling overlooked, McKenzie insists that Jacobs is the right person for the job.
The delay in appointing Jacobs has sparked controversy, with some questioning Mayor Dada Morero's decision to appoint a 24-year-old with no municipal experience to the role. However, McKenzie attributes the delay to the EFF's desire to secure the portfolio for themselves, specifically wanting their MMC for Public Safety, Mgcini Tshwaku, to be moved to transport.
"We are waiting for the mayor to take his decision," McKenzie said, emphasizing that the PA has refused to budge on the issue. The EFF has not been reachable for comment, but McKenzie's stance suggests that the party is determined to see Jacobs take up the transport portfolio.
As the drama unfolds, one thing is clear: Gayton McKenzie is not backing down. With his sights set on delivering quality service to the people of Johannesburg, McKenzie remains resolute in his support for Liam Jacobs. Will the mayor ultimately side with McKenzie, or will the EFF's demands prevail? Only time will tell.
