Mkhwanazi's 'Brotherly' Bond with Alleged Crime Kingpin Raises Eyebrows

Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has admitted to having a close relationship with alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, describing him as a "blood brother".

Mkhwanazi revealed that he first met Matlala in 2022 through members of Matlala's Cat VIP security company.

During his testimony at the Madlanga Commission, Mkhwanazi stated that Matlala would often ask him about business opportunities and even provided him with financial assistance, including money for petrol and groceries.

Mkhwanazi also claimed that Matlala wanted him to retire and start his own venture, promising further support.

The admission has raised concerns about Mkhwanazi's involvement in alleged corruption and his authority to enter into agreements with Matlala's companies, including Medicare24 and CAT VIP Security.

The commission is investigating allegations of fraud, corruption, and abuse of power.
