When athletes speak, Limpopo listens. And when Mr. Phateng Kgomo, Chairperson of the Limpopo Athletics Athletes Commission, speaks, it’s with the voice of 100+ runners, jumpers, throwers, and coaches who are shaping what comes next.

The 2nd Annual LIMA Athletes’ Indaba 2026 is the stage.

Date: Saturday, 04 July 2026

Time: 07:30

Venue: Capricorn High School Auditorium, Polokwane

The Mission: “Empowering Athletes Through Unity, Governance and Sustainable Development”

This is not another talk-shop. It’s a strategic platform to put athletes at the centre of decisions. From governance and transparency, to athlete welfare and protection, to grassroots development, high-performance, and commercial opportunities.

Phateng Kgomo’s Opening Address: “The Role of Athletes in Shaping the Future of Limpopo Athletics”

As Chairperson, Kgomo is leading the call: Athletes must be heard. Athletes must be protected. Athletes must lead.

The Indaba brings together athletes, coaches, clubs, provincial leadership, government sport officials, sports scientists, sponsors, and media. The goal is simple: turn athlete concerns into resolutions, and resolutions into action.

The Programme is athlete-first:

1.  State of Athletics & Athlete Representation - Governance, transparency, club and provincial development.

2.  Athlete Welfare & Protection - Mental health, injury management, safeguarding, anti-doping, education and career transition.

3.  Transformation & Grassroots Development - Schools, rural/township participation, women, youth, para-athletes, talent retention.

4.  High Performance & Commercial Opportunities - Sponsorship, personal branding, media engagement, with elite athletes like Dannie Stroh and Tshephang Dinkuru.

5.  Open Floor Athlete Engagement - Athletes ask, leadership answers. Direct. No filter.

6.  Adoption of Resolutions & Closing - The Athletes Indaba Declaration will be adopted, with an implementation plan for LIMA.

Expected Outcomes: Athlete-centred recommendations. Improved stakeholder collaboration. Governance and welfare resolutions. Strengthened athlete participation structures. Limpopo positioned as a leader in athlete-centred governance.

From the Sisonke Running Club at Kasi 10 Race Mania, to coaches, dietitians, and medical practitioners on the panels — this Indaba is about the whole athlete. Performance, protection, and pathways.

Phateng Kgomo says it plainly: This is an investment in the future of athletics in Limpopo. Through unity, engagement, and collaborative leadership, we will strengthen governance, protect our athletes, and build sustainable excellence across the province.
