Police Minister's Fate Hangs in the Balance as Evidence Mounts Against Him

As the Madlanga Commission continues to uncover the truth behind the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), the evidence against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is mounting. With three significant weaknesses already exposed, it appears that President Cyril Ramaphosa may be left with no choice but to take drastic action.

The testimony of Major General Patronella Van Rooyen, SAPS's legal chief, has revealed that Mchunu overstepped his authority by making operational decisions that fell under the mandate of the National Commissioner. This, combined with earlier claims by General Fannie Masemola that Mchunu encroached on his role, paints a picture of a minister who has disregarded the boundaries of his power.

Given the gravity of these allegations, it seems likely that President Ramaphosa will need to take decisive action. However, the appointment of Firoz Cachalia as acting Minister of Police raises questions about the efficiency of the government's decision-making process. With two deputy police ministers already in place, it's puzzling that an external candidate was chosen to act in the role, rather than one of the existing deputies. This decision not only raises eyebrows but also comes at a significant cost to the state, as Mchunu continues to draw a salary while on special leave.

In light of these circumstances, it might be prudent for Ramaphosa to consider reassigning Mchunu to another department or dismissing him altogether. The current situation is not only costly but also inefficient, and it's essential that the government takes a firm stance against corruption and ensures that those in positions of power are held accountable. By taking decisive action, Ramaphosa can restore public trust and uphold the integrity of the government.
