Cllr John Mpe, Executive Mayor of Polokwane Municipality, the Capital City of Limpopo Province, has received a prestigious invitation to represent South African municipal leadership at the 2026 General Assembly of the BRICS+ Association of Cities and Municipalities in New Delhi, India.

This glittering recognition celebrates Mayor Mpe's distinguished experience in advancing cities and municipalities, spotlighting Polokwane's innovative approaches to social development, digitalization, architecture, urban planning, and sustainable ecology.

Polokwane, affectionately known as the "Garden of Eden", is a thriving hub of activity, boasting stunning natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage. Under Mayor Mpe's leadership who recently celebrated his birthday, the city has transformed into a modern centre, with shopping malls, restaurants, entertainment venues, and thriving residential estates.

The BRICS+ Assembly, which took place from 15-17 March 2026, was a pivotal event, with Mayor Mpe playing a key role in shaping inter-municipal cooperation and joint action priorities during India's leadership tenure.

The agenda included pivotal committee sessions, a BRICS+ Women's Committee meeting, a tourism roundtable, and the centenary celebration of the All-India Institute of Local Self-Government, underscoring municipal governance excellence.

He has led Polokwane to achieve remarkable milestones, including the Seshego Water Treatment Plant, which provides over 50% of the township's water needs, and the rehabilitation and resurfacing of over 10 kilometers of homes.

The ANC's Head of Presidency, Sibongile Besani, has praised Mayor Mpe and his administration for their exceptional service delivery record, citing the municipality's achievements as a model for others to follow. "If you want another paragon of service delivery, come to Polokwane Municipality led by its Executive Mayor comrade John Mpe," Besani said.
