POLOKWANE — Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba led the media launch of the 2026 Limpopo Championship Golf Tournament on 09 September 2026 at The Ranch Hotel in Polokwane, reaffirming her support for sports tourism as a driver of economic growth.

The Chairperson of the Limpopo Tourism Agency Board, Mr Freddy Greaver, and Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, addressed the media launch of the tournament.

The Chairperson highlighted the growth of the championship, its partnership with the Sunshine Tour and its contribution to positioning Limpopo as a leading golf tourism destination. He also outlined the province's broader programme of tourism events aimed at promoting emerging enterprises, transformation and inclusive growth within the sector.

The Premier was joined by Mr Greaver and other stakeholders for the launch of the tournament that continues to position Limpopo as a competitive sports-tourism destination.

Addressing the gathering, Premier Ramathuba commended Mr Greaver and Limpopo Tourism Agency for their work in promoting the province through major events. She reiterated her full support for the Limpopo Championship and its ability to attract visitors and investment.

Premier Ramathuba described Limpopo as an authentic and diverse destination offering exceptional golf courses, wildlife, culture and natural landscapes. She emphasised that the championship extends beyond sport by attracting players, officials, sponsors, spectators and families who support accommodation establishments, transport services, restaurants and other local tourism businesses.

She urged the Limpopo community to treat visitors with humility and respect, noting that a welcoming spirit is key to growing tourism.

She also recommitted her government to continuing to create jobs as part of efforts to curb crime in the province, saying that major tournaments and investment in tourism create work opportunities, especially for young people.

Calling for humility, the Premier said Limpopo must remain grounded even as it grows.

On a lighter note, she cautioned against judging people by how they dress. She said at times you will find that the person who is not wearing expensive clothing such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci is a CEO and a serious investor.

She shared that she recently went to church and sat next to a person who was dressed simply, not in expensive labels, only to be told afterwards that the person has a lot of money and wealth.

"I today confirm I will not buy Louis Vuitton and Gucci clothing," she said jokingly. "People with money don't wear Louis Vuitton and Gucci... but people without money do wear... I think at times such things are a scam," she added, drawing laughter and applause from the crowd.

The Premier reaffirmed the Provincial Government's commitment to using major events and local venues to stimulate economic activity, create employment opportunities and strengthen Limpopo's profile as a competitive sports-tourism destination.

She further urged more investors to come to Limpopo to boost the economy of the province, including through sports tournaments.

She also promoted the upcoming Charity Golf Day scheduled for 11 September 2026 at Euphoria Golf Estate at 10h00, under the theme "Tee Off For A Cause. Giving Back. Changing Lives," in partnership with Lepelle Northern Water, where all proceeds will support communities.

The 2026 Limpopo Championship will take place at Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate.
