South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on an official visit to South Africa at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on April 24, 2025. This historic visit marked the first time a Ukrainian head of state had visited South Africa since the two countries established formal diplomatic relations 33 years ago
During their meeting, the two presidents discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, focusing on trade, agriculture, education, and infrastructure development. They also explored opportunities for cooperation in peace diplomacy and post-conflict reconstruction. President Ramaphosa appreciated Ukraine's support for South Africa during its liberation struggle, noting that some South African exiles received training and education in Ukraine.
Both presidents emphasized the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in resolving conflicts, particularly in Ukraine. President Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa's commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international disputes.
The leaders discussed potential areas of cooperation in agriculture, trade, and education, with a focus on mutually beneficial partnerships.
They reinforced their shared commitment to respect for the rule of law in international relations, multilateralism, and the central role of the United Nations in global governance.
After the meeting, President Ramaphosa briefed the media on the discussions, saying, "We have reinforced our common commitment to respect the rule of law in international relations, multilateralism, the central role of the United Nations in global governance, and the maintenance of global peace and security." He also mentioned that South Africa stands ready to continue supporting all credible and inclusive multilateral efforts aimed at achieving a just, sustainable, and comprehensive peace in Ukraine.
President Zelenskyy thanked President Ramaphosa for the warm welcome and expressed his appreciation for South Africa's support. The two presidents reaffirmed the bonds of friendship and solidarity between their countries and looked forward to continued engagement and cooperation that benefits their peoples and countries.
