In a significant address underscoring the pivotal role of robust infrastructure in provincial development, Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Tonny Rachoene articulated a compelling vision for Limpopo's Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure.
Speaking at a ceremony welcoming newly appointed members to the Audit and Risk Committee of Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL), MEC Rachoene emphasized that roads are not merely physical conduits but lifelines underpinning economic vibrancy, social connectivity, and rural transformation.
"Roads are the arteries of progress," MEC Rachoene declared, highlighting their indispensable role in facilitating unimpeded access for farmers to markets, enabling businesses to thrive, and ensuring seamless movement of people and goods across Limpopo's diverse landscapes. "When roads are well-constructed and maintained, they eradicate isolation, unlock economic potential, and catalyze development," he asserted, framing infrastructure as a cornerstone of inclusive growth.
MEC Rachoene extended profound appreciation to outgoing Audit and Risk Committee members whose steadfast dedication had navigated RAL through complex challenges, fortifying governance and oversight. As Limpopo embarks on a new chapter with refreshed leadership, he stressed an imperative ethos: Commitment and Full Participation. "Every stakeholder, every team member, and every partner must be wholly invested in our collective mission," MEC Rachoene intoned, urging active engagement as a non-negotiable prerequisite for success.
Established under the Limpopo Province Roads Agency Act 7 of 1998, RAL plays a strategic role in shaping the province's infrastructure tapestry. Under MEC Rachoene's stewardship, and with him fulfilling the critical shareholder representative role, the agency pursues technical excellence in development and management. "Our endeavor transcends mere infrastructure delivery; it is about crafting a developmental state that puts people first, leaves no one behind, and spurs economic transformation and spatial justice," he pronounced.
MEC Rachoene elucidated that effective roads infrastructure is intrinsically linked to Limpopo's agricultural sector vitality, facilitating farmers' access to markets, enhancing supply chain efficiencies, and bolstering food security. "Good roads mean farmers can move produce without hindrance, businesses can operate optimally, and communities can connect – it is the bedrock upon which economic activities flourish," he underscored.
Key leaders pivotal to this mission include Moses Tseli, Chairperson of the RAL Board, Acting CEO Makhitha Chesane, and non-executive directors Simphiwe Mamvura, Casper Mnisi, and Mercy Ramabulana, alongside ex officio members like Ennie Tema from Limpopo Provincial Treasury – collectively embodying an integrated approach to governance and delivery.
Acknowledging Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba's visionary leadership, MEC Rachoene noted that challenges are inherent – as evidenced by past governance complexities surrounding RAL, including judicial rulings on leadership appointments. "Yet, through unwavering commitment and collaboration, we navigate these complexities to propel our department forward," he affirmed resolutely.
Concluding his address, MEC Rachoene issued a clarion call to stakeholders: "Together, with commitment, participation, and a shared vision, we will drive Limpopo's Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure towards greater heights. We will deliver infrastructure that transforms, connects, and serves our people effectively – because when roads are there, everything is key." In his words lay the conviction that Limpopo's future prosperity is inextricably tied to the robustness of its infrastructure backbone.
