SESHEGO — When misfortune knocks without warning, leadership is measured not in speeches, but in showing up.

Polokwane Municipality Executive Mayor and ANC Limpopo Provincial Deputy Chairperson, Cllr John Makoro Mpe, today walked into the Moloto home in Seshego Zone 5, Ward 11, hours after fire ripped through their house and left a family’s dignity in ashes.

No lives were lost. No injuries were reported. But a roof was gone, belongings destroyed, and a single mother left to carry the weight of rebuilding.

The Mayor came with more than condolences.

Standing with the Moloto family, Mayor Mpe expressed relief first, then action.

“We thank God that there are no injuries. The municipality will engage relevant stakeholders who can assist the family. Through the Makoro Foundation, I will also personally assist the family,” he said.

ASSESSING THE DAMAGE: Mayor Mpe inspects the burnt walls with the head of the Moloto household. A builder and electrician will be deployed this week to begin restoration.

The intervention starts immediately. By Tuesday, a builder will assess the damage. Within two weeks, subject to the assessment, the municipality and the Makoro Foundation aim to have the home restored. 

A qualified electrician will also inspect the wiring to ensure the house is safe before repairs are completed.

For Mayor Mpe, this is personal. The Moloto household is headed by a single parent — making the road to recovery even steeper. “When a roof burns, a family’s sense of safety and dignity is shaken. And when that happens, leadership must come closer,” he said.

Cllr Mpe has built a reputation across Limpopo not just as a political leader, but as a profound leader and good Samaritan — one who answers the call when communities are at their lowest.

Today that message was clear:  “The Moloto family is not alone.” The municipality has committed to mobilise stakeholders to support the family through the rebuilding process, while the Makoro Foundation will bridge the gaps with direct assistance. As the smoke clears in Seshego Zone 5, one thing is certain: leadership showed up.
