Executive Mayor Cde Makoro John Mpe showed why he’s called a consummate leader on Monday, steering the 2026/27 Draft IDP/Budget Consultation for the Seshego Cluster at Ngaoko Ramahlodi Sports Complex with the kind of calm that proves the ANC did very well by appointing him.
The session for Wards 11, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 37 was not overflowing, but it was substantive. Residents came to thank Mpe for the job he has done, to share their vision for Seshego, and to outline the enhancements they still want. Water, roads, billing, youth jobs — all were tabled. But the dominant message was gratitude. “You have done extremely well,” one resident said.
There was one moment that tested the room. At times, members of the community will start with something to get attention, and Ward 14 did just that. Without an elected representative, residents raised their grievances loudly to make sure they were heard. Mpe never blinked. He called order, gave them the floor, and made sure every issue was minuted for action. What started loud ended with nods and “Re a leboga, Mayor.”
That is John Mpe. A leader of leaders. He doesn’t avoid the spark — he manages it. He doesn’t talk past people — he brings them in. It’s why he was elected ANC Limpopo Deputy Provincial Chairperson, and why Seshego showed him love on Monday. They believe in his leadership because they’ve seen it when it counts.
The consultation ran 10h00 to 13h00, live-streamed under the “Re aga Polokwane” banner with sign language interpretation. MMC for Water and Sanitation, Cllr Motlogeleng Alfred Moakamedi, was present. City Manager Ms. Thuso Nemugumoni also participated, responding to residents on administrative processes and timeframes for feedback.
“The IDP is not for shelves. It is a contract with you,” Mpe told the hall. “When you thank me for work done, I thank you for telling me where to work next.”
By the end, the room that started with a Ward 14 flare-up closed with appreciation. That’s exceptional leadership: turning attention into action, and grievance into gratitude.
