President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid a heartfelt tribute to Reverend Jesse Jackson, describing him as a champion of justice and equality who stood firmly with South Africa during its darkest hours.

Ramaphosa emphasized that Jackson's bond with South Africa was forged by his commitment to justice, not birthplace, and that he helped transform the anti-apartheid struggle into a global movement.

Jackson's activism and influence played a significant role in shaping international opinion against apartheid. He marched alongside Oliver Tambo and Trevor Huddleston in London, lobbied world leaders, and urged sanctions against South Africa.

Ramaphosa noted that Jackson's voice refused to be silenced, preaching hope from Chicago to Soweto, and inspiring generations to fight for justice.

SA President recalled Jackson's first visit to South Africa in 1979, shortly after Steve Biko's death, where he drew huge crowds in Soweto and declared, "This land is changing hands." Jackson was also present in Cape Town when Nelson Mandela walked free in 1990, a moment he described as a "release of glee and joy" ¹ ⁴.

In recognition of his contributions, South Africa awarded Jackson the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo in Silver in 2013. Ramaphosa urged people to honour Jackson's legacy by living the values he championed: justice, equality, dignity, and service to others.

The President highlighted Jackson's unwavering solidarity with the oppressed, saying, "When our cause was ignored, and many would look away, he stood firm in solidarity with us. He looked at a people he had never met and said: their pain is my pain. Their chains are my chains. Their struggle for freedom is my struggle".

Ramaphosa's tribute to Jackson has been widely praised, with many applauding his leadership and commitment to justice and equality. As a leader of principle, Ramaphosa continues to inspire hope and solidarity, embodying the values that Jackson lived for.
