The African National Congress (ANC) has announced plans to embark on an intensive national process to identify and headhunt capable mayoral candidates from across society, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said.

This move marks a significant shift in the party's approach to selecting leaders for local government positions. Mbalula emphasized that the party is looking for individuals with proven leadership track records and governance capability, regardless of their background.

According to Mbalula, the ANC will consider experienced public representatives, professionals, community leaders, and veterans of government for these positions. The party is also opening up the process to allow communities to propose names of potential candidates.

"This is a deliberate effort to strengthen our local governance and ensure that we have capable leaders in place to drive development and service delivery," Mbalula said.

The move has been welcomed by many as a positive step towards ensuring that the ANC puts forward strong and capable candidates in the upcoming local government elections.

However, some have raised questions about the potential challenges and implications of this approach, including the risk of alienating internal party candidates and the potential for external candidates to lack the necessary connections and networks within the party.

Despite these concerns, Mbalula emphasized that the ANC is committed to finding the best possible candidates to lead the country's municipalities. "We are not looking for just anyone, we are looking for people with a proven track

record of leadership and governance," he said.

The ANC's decision to headhunt mayoral candidates is seen as a bid to strengthen its chances in the upcoming local government elections. The party has faced criticism for its handling of local governance in recent years, with many municipalities struggling with service delivery and corruption.

By bringing in fresh faces and new perspectives, the ANC hopes to revitalize its local government structures and improve its performance in the elections.

The party is expected to announce more details about the headhunting process in the coming weeks, including the criteria for selecting candidates and the timeline for the process.

As the country gears up for the local government elections, the ANC's move is likely to have significant implications for the political landscape. With capable leaders at the helm, municipalities can drive development and improve the lives of citizens.
