Axed Minister of Higher Education and Training Nobuhle Nkabane.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has removed Nobuhle Nkabane as Minister of Higher Education and Training, appointing Buti Manamela as her replacement. Nkabane's departure comes amid allegations of lying to parliament about the appointment of a controversial panel to appoint Sector Education and Training Authorities (Seta) boards.
In a statement, Nkabane thanked Ramaphosa for entrusting her with the responsibility of serving as a minister. "It has been a privilege to lead this important portfolio and I am grateful to the sector and the people of South Africa for their support and for allowing me to serve in this capacity," she said.
Manamela, who had previously served as Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, is expected to bring stability to the department. The presidency announced that Nomusa Dube-Ncube would be appointed as Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, citing her extensive experience in government leadership.
The Sunday Times reported that Nkabane was facing removal due to allegations of dishonesty in her dealings with parliament. According to the report, Ramaphosa and top ANC officials had resolved that Nkabane had compromised the party and her position in the cabinet.
The appointments come as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle, with Ramaphosa aiming to strengthen the government's leadership and restore public trust. Manamela's experience and Dube-Ncube's expertise are expected to contribute to the department's success.
The changes are seen as a significant development in the government's efforts to address challenges in the higher education sector and restore public confidence in the department.
