CITY OF STARS SHINES AGAIN: POLOKWANE SCOOPS NATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD UNDER MAYOR JOHN MPE'S CLEAN GOVERNANCE
POLOKWANE -They call it the City of Stars for a reason. And last night in Durban, it proved it again.
Polokwane Municipality, led by Executive Mayor Cllr John Mpe, continues to shine nationally as its people make their mark and bring home well-deserved recognition for clean, competent and progressive local government.
At the prestigious 97th CIGFARO Annual Conference in Durban, Polokwane's Manager: Budget and Reporting, Ms Zinzi Mphahlele, received the CIGFARO Excellence in Public Sector Award 2026 from the Chartered Institute of Government Finance, Audit & Risk Officers.
This is not a small award. CIGFARO is the highest authority on public finance in South Africa. To win Excellence in the Public Sector means your books are clean, your governance is tight, your leadership is ethical, and your service is excellent.
It is a direct reflection of the administration Mayor John Mpe has built.
In a municipality where many others are collapsing under audit disclaimers, irregular expenditure and cash-flow crises, Polokwane under Mpe has become a case study in Naturally Progressive governance - financially disciplined, professionally run, and proudly accountable.
As Ms Mphahlele herself aptly put it when receiving the crystal trophy and certificate, this recognition is not just a personal achievement, but a reflection of the commitment, integrity and excellence that public servants bring to their work every day.
That is the culture John Mpe has instilled: That being a public servant means serving the public with integrity.
The award, presented as "In recognition of exceptional dedication, leadership and outstanding contribution to sound financial management, governance and the advancement of public sector excellence", belongs to Zinzi - but it belongs to Polokwane.
It means when Polokwane Municipality says it will deliver, it has the budget controls to deliver. When it says it will spend, it spends correctly. When it says it is progressive, it can prove it.
Under Executive Mayor John Mpe, Polokwane has quietly become Limpopo's most stable metro, the anchor of the province. While national headlines are full of municipalities failing to pay Eskom, failing to pass audits, failing to submit budgets - Polokwane is winning national excellence awards for budget and reporting. That is what voters want. Not noise. Results.
The city is not just building roads and keeping lights on. It is building a team of black professionals, women in finance like Zinzi, who can compete and win on a national stage in Durban against the biggest metros in the country.
As the poster from the City says: "Your achievement is our achievement. Keep shining, Polokwane!"
The Azanian says: Congratulations, Zinzi! Congratulations, Mayor Mpe! Congratulations, City of Stars!Polokwane continues to shine.
