Pretoria– At just 22, Aluta 'Don Luta' Manale is doing what most artists twice his age struggle with: telling the truth and winning.
Two years after dropping The Freshmen Story EP, the Pretoria-born rapper, photographer, and WITS graduate returns with The Sophomore Story EP, a five-track, 14-minute gut punch of growth. And this time, he’s traded his signature boom bap for trap beats that hit just as hard as his lyrics.
“It’s about the uncomfortable growth,” Don Luta says. “Grief, falling out with friends, shaping a new identity, and finally tasting some hard-earned success.”
From Vuzu Hustle to Vindication
Don Luta’s hip-hop journey started where many SA kids found their spark: watching Vuzu Hustle. Inspired by J. Cole and Shane Eagle, the young MC built a lane blending laid-back lyrics, rapid flows, and heartfelt storytelling over hard-hitting beats.
But the last two years tested him. Personal struggles and heavy responsibilities pulled him away from music. Most would have quit. Don Luta enrolled at WITS, graduated, and came back stronger.
What sets Don Luta apart isn’t just bars. It’s vision.
While others chase clout, he’s chasing legacy. “My ultimate goal is success that gives me peace of mind,” he says. “Then I want to use it to benefit the community.”
His blueprint? Build a music studio where young talents can nurture their gifts while staying in school. Support the next big sporting star. Push mental health awareness. Education first, always.
His inspirations are close to home: his uncle Jason, and South African YouTuber and actress Neo Rapetsoa. “Seeing people I admire achieve their dreams after grinding motivates me,” he says.
The Sophomore Story EP is chapter two of a planned three-project trilogy. If Freshmen was the introduction, Sophomore is the come-up. Raw, honest, and polished, it documents a young man refusing to let pain define him.
In 14 minutes, Don Luta proves you can graduate, grieve, glow up, and give back, all without losing your soul.
One of the most promising MCs of his generation just made his case. And he’s only getting started.
