"Not really that smart" - Party insiders slam Duduzane elevation as SG + TG walk out. "Embarrassing" cracks explode 4 months before November polls

DURBAN— Let’s be frank.Jacob Zuma has chosen blood over brains.
In a sweeping purge this week, the MK Party President removed Dr John Hlophe — a former Judge President, an intellectual heavyweight — and installed his son Duduzane Zuma as First Deputy President.
Party insiders are blunt: "Zuma son is not really that smart. Not really that smart. But he has installed him."
The result? Embarrassment. Chaos. And a party imploding 4 months before the most anticipated local elections.
On Tuesday evening, Zuma announced the "reconfiguration".
Duduzane Zuma — businessman, no elected office, no parliamentary experience — is now MK Party First Deputy President.
He replaces Hlophe, who remains Parliamentary Leader.
"The appointment... places him directly below his father in the party hierarchy and is likely to intensify speculation that Jacob Zuma is positioning his son as a future successor," IOL reported.
Tony Yengeni was made Second Deputy. The message to MK veterans: Loyalty to the Zuma name now matters more than experience, struggle credentials, or intellect.
Zuma didn’t stop there. Per the official MK statement:
1. Nkosinathi Nhleko - FIRED as National Chair. In: Rev Phakathi
2. Nomsa Dlamini - FIRED as Deputy Secretary-General. In: Lindiwe Mtshali
3. Willies Mchunu - Brought into Presidency Collective. Stays KZN Leader
Then the power grab:
- SPT dissolved - Zuma says MKP won’t pay its debts
- PTT reinstated under Zuma direct control
- Finances seized - Zandi Hlophe + Sibonelo Maphumulo now sole IEC signatories
- Secretariat stripped - powers moved to presidency
The fallout was immediate and public. At Protea Hotel OR Tambo, a meeting to plan for November 4 local elections descended into war.
SG Sibonelo Nomvalo and TG Brian Molefe were ordered to hand signing powers to GM Zandile Makhathini-Neer. They were accused of undermining the SPT.
They shouted at DSG Nomsa Dlamini — who Zuma fired 2 days later — and walked out.
"It left uBaba stunned," a source said. "He said he needed advice on how to deal with people who behave like children and pick fights with women. Had I known this is how they behave, I would never have appointed them."
Zuma’s answer? Command them back. The statement orders: "The Secretary-General and the Treasurer-General shall return to work and resume their full responsibilities with immediate effect."
This is not happening in a vacuum.November 4, 2026. Local elections. The most anticipated poll since 2024. "It will really affect them because it's embarrassing what's happening," said a senior party source. "It shows you... you replace a judge who is very experienced, intellectually pregnant, with his son."
That is the damage.
While other parties launch manifestos, MKP is explaining why the judge is out and the son is in. While voters ask about service delivery, MKP is fighting over who controls the bank account.
Zuma also claims he has not seen the forensic report and demanded it first. No word on allegations. No word on who commissioned it.
But with finances centralized and signing powers moved, the timing speaks for itself.
The MK Party sold itself as disciplined. Military. Different.
Today it looks like this: Experienced judge out. Son in.
Chairperson fired. DSG fired. SG + TG ordered back after walkout.
Money, secretariat, IEC signatories — all under one man.
The cracks are no longer cracks. They are canyons.They are personal. They are embarrassing.And they will cost MKP at the polls if this is not fixed.
Because voters don’t vote for dynasties. They vote for delivery.
