POLOKWANE-Under decisive municipal leadership, the future of Limpopo’s healthcare is rising fast in the Peter Mokaba Precinct. Brick by brick and steel by steel, the Limpopo Academic Hospital is taking shape, and Polokwane is proving that when a city leads with purpose, delivery follows.

Leading the charge was Polokwane Executive Mayor Cllr Makoro John Mpe, who hosted a high-level board site visit on Friday morning to showcase the project’s visible progress.

Joined by Limpopo MEC for Health Dieketseng Mashego representing Premier Phophi Ramathuba, Capricorn District Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Mamedupi Teffo, and senior leadership from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), Mayor Mpe turned the visit into a masterclass in accountable, hands-on governance.

Three years after the historic sod-turning on 18 July 2023, the Peter Mokaba Precinct no longer looks like a promise on paper. Structures are up, contractors are on site daily, and the outline of a world-class referral and training facility is unmistakable.

Mayor Mpe made it clear that this is no accident.

“This is what happens when all spheres of government work together with a single focus: delivery for our people,” he said. “Polokwane insisted from day one that this project must create jobs, transfer skills, and change the economic face of our city. Today, you can see that promise becoming reality.”

Under Mayor Mpe’s leadership, the municipality has kept a close watch on the local impact of the project. The numbers speak for themselves: approximately 2,400 jobs during construction, and over 1,000 permanent jobs once the hospital is operational.

“This is the kind of infrastructure-led development that changes lives and strengthens local economies,” Mpe said. “We didn’t just turn the sod for a photo. We turned it to open doors for our youth, our contractors, and our suppliers.”

What’s happening at the Peter Mokaba Precinct is bigger than one hospital. It’s a signal of Polokwane’s trajectory.

The scale of the project, the coordination between city, district, province and DBSA, and the proactive planning for roads, water, transport and housing around the site all point to one thing: Polokwane is preparing itself to function as a fully-fledged metropolitan municipality.

“This visit confirms what we’ve been working toward,” Mayor Mpe said. “Polokwane is not waiting for metro status. We are building the systems, the infrastructure, and the economic base that make a metro work for its people.”

Capricorn District Executive Mayor Cllr Mamedupi Teffo agreed.

“When Polokwane leads, the district follows with confidence. This hospital will be a catalyst for the whole precinct, and it’s happening because the city is on top of every detail.”

For Mayor Mpe, the hospital is a legacy project that will define Polokwane’s reputation as a city that delivers.

“Rome was not built in a day,” he said, “but today we’ve shown that Polokwane is building something that generations will remember for decades to come. We started this project in 2023. In 2026, we’re standing on a construction site that proves we keep our word.”

With construction advancing on schedule, the city is now preparing for the next phase: ensuring the hospital opens with the staff, equipment, and surrounding infrastructure needed to serve the province from day one.

All signs point in one direction. Polokwane is not just growing. It is maturing into a metro that puts community lives at the centre of every decision. And under Mayor Mpe’s leadership, that transition is already in motion.
