In the ANC, history remembers two kinds of leaders. The ones who fill stadiums with sound, and the ones who fill branches with structure.
Lesiba Pathfinder Matsemela belongs to the second school. He does not make noise. He makes cadres. And in Peter Mokaba Region, that is why he commands respect, and power.
His politics began with a task, not a title. In 2001, at 17 years old, he joined the ANCYL as a member and recruitment officer. The work was simple and hard: find comrades, build structures, keep discipline. “You cannot lead people you have not built,” he says. “The branch is the university of revolution.” That conviction has carried him for 24 years.
The record is step by step, ground by ground. 2002: COSAS Seshego Branch Deputy Chairperson under Chairperson Moses Maponya. Young Communist League: Branch Secretary, Ward 12. 2009: ANC BEC Member, Ward 14. The same year, Deputy Regional Chairperson of SASCO in Capricorn Region under Chairperson Ngoako Selamolele, 2009–2010.
Then came the anchor. From 2013 to 2025, he was Branch Secretary of the ANC in Ward 37. Twelve years of meetings after dark, door-to-door work, and keeping the base solid when it was easier to be absent. That kind of tenure is not appointed. It is earned with boots, minutes, and trust. From there he rose: Deputy Sub-Regional Secretary in 2016, Sub-Regional Secretary from 2022 to 2025.
In 2025, he assumed office as Regional Secretary of the ANC Peter Mokaba Region. From an ANCYL recruit at 17, to the administrative and political engine room of the Region named after Peter Mokaba. That is ascension through work.
On discipline, he stands in a long line. “The ANC does not need loud men. It needs disciplined men,” he says. “Oliver Tambo taught us that discipline is the mother of victory. Nelson Mandela taught us that a leader must walk with the people, not ahead of them. Steve Biko taught us to be fearless in principle and consistent in practice. Chris Hani taught us that a leader must be the first to sacrifice and the last to eat. I follow that school.”
That discipline shows in how he leads. He avoids the spotlight because the work is on the ground. “Red bridges are built with bricks, not bytes. If you are not on the ground, you are not in politics.”
He is not a performer. “I am not a superstar. I am not a musician. I am a politician. Foot soldiers must deliver, not dance for cameras.”
On unity, he is firm. “When we divide the branch, we weaken the movement. My job is to unite, not to crown camps. Factionalism is lazy politics. Unity is not a slogan on a T-shirt. It is a daily decision.”
That humility is why comrades trust him. They say: When Lesiba points, he does not miss. Because he was there first — in Ward 12, Ward 14, Ward 37. He commands sanity, not spectacle. He commands power without raising his voice, because his credentials do the talking.
Lesiba is working tirelessly for one reason: to ensure the ANC wins the next coming local government elections in Limpopo, and to prepare the ground for the national elections after that.
The numbers tell him why this matters. In Limpopo, the ANC remains the ruling party with 74%. That is a base of trust, a mandate to protect, and a responsibility to deepen. Nationally, the picture shifted. At 40%, the ANC is no longer the national governing party. “Limpopo must lead by example,” he says. “We have 74% because our branches are alive. We must keep them alive, disciplined, and united.”
His ambition is clear and practical: peace in structures, unity in branches, delivery on the ground. “We will not win with fights on WhatsApp. We will win with campaigns in streets. Voter registration. Branch audits. Cadre development. Door-to-door. That is how 74% becomes 80%.”
He calls it preparation, not panic. “Local elections are the furnace for national elections. If we are strong in every ward in Limpopo in 2026, we are ready for the national contest. If we are divided, we are defeated. So we choose unity.”
He also insists on character. “Comrade Biko said the most potent weapon is the mind. Comrade Tambo said the movement is bigger than any individual. Comrade Mandela said it is in your hands to make a better world. My task is to make sure our hands are clean, our structures are strong, and our message is clear.”
Lesiba Pathfinder Matsemela is not chasing clout. He is chasing capacity. He is not making noise. He is making the ANC ready. From ANCYL at 17, to Regional Secretary of Peter Mokaba, his life is a curriculum: recruit, organize, discipline, unite, deliver. That is why he is trusted. That is why he is followed.
In a moment when the movement must defend 74% in Limpopo and rebuild for the nation, the Region has a commander who leads from the front, but without the noise. A real politician. A real commander.
