Polokwane, South Africa - In a powerful address at the 2025 Provincial World Food Day commemorations, Executive Mayor of Polokwane Municipality, Cllr Makoro John Mpe, has reaffirmed the municipality's commitment to building resilient, food-secure communities.
The event, hosted by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, brought together stakeholders to highlight the urgent need to strengthen food security, empower rural communities, and promote sustainable agricultural practices across Limpopo.
Cllr Mpe emphasized the importance of community-driven initiatives, saying, "Giving a tree is one of the greatest gifts we can offer each other - a lasting symbol of life, nourishment and hope for generations to come."
He stressed that the municipality's efforts are geared towards creating a sustainable and equitable food system that benefits all residents, particularly the most vulnerable.
To support household food production and community greening initiatives, Polokwane Municipality has donated 50 fruit trees and 10 shade trees to the community.
This gesture is part of the municipality's efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and food security. The trees will be distributed to households and community gardens, providing a source of fresh produce and income for families.
"The donation of trees is just the beginning," said Cllr Mpe. "We are committed to working with our communities to create a food-secure future for all. We will continue to implement initiatives that promote sustainable agriculture, support small-scale farmers, and improve access to nutritious food for all residents."
The event was attended by Honourable MEC Nakedi Kekana, who praised the municipality's efforts in promoting food security and sustainable agriculture. "Cllr Mpe's leadership is a shining example of what can be achieved when we work together to address the challenges facing our communities," she said.
Cllr Mpe's vision for a food-secure Polokwane is not limited to just words. Under his leadership, the municipality has implemented various initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture, supporting small-scale farmers, and improving access to nutritious food for all residents.
These initiatives include the establishment of community gardens, training programs for farmers, and the provision of agricultural inputs to support household food production.
The 2025 Provincial World Food Day commemorations serve as a reminder of the importance of collective action in addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable development. As Cllr Mpe's leadership continues to inspire, the people of Polokwane are hopeful for a brighter, more food-secure future.
