Deputy President Paul Mashatile has broken his silence to reassure the nation that he is recovering well after undergoing a minor medical procedure.
In a statement released today, Tuesday 15 September 2026, Mashatile said: “My recovery is progressing well, and I am regaining strength each day.” 5e2d
The Deputy President, who became unwell while at home in Johannesburg and was admitted for a minor surgical procedure and observation before being discharged, has been on medical leave on the advice of his doctors. 9e24
His Office has confirmed that “The Deputy President is recovering well and remains in contact with his office” and that his programme continues to be managed appropriately during recovery. 9e24
Despite being away from public duties, Mashatile has continued to serve — joining Parliament and participating in crucial meetings on virtual platforms. 9e24
In his message, Mashatile thanked his family, his medical team, his team in the Office, his colleagues in government and in the ANC, and President Cyril Ramaphosa for their support, saying “Your prayers and encouragement have been a source of strength.” 5e2d
He reaffirmed his commitment: “I assure you that I remain dedicated to the responsibilities entrusted to me, and I look forward to returning to my duties in full, serving our nation with renewed energy and commitment.” 5e2d
The Presidency has urged the public to rely on official channels and not speculation, respecting the Deputy President's right to medical privacy. 9e24
For The Azanian, this is good news. At 64, Mashatile remains one of the frontrunners to lead the ANC and the country, and his calm, resilient recovery shows leadership even in illness.
We wish Deputy President Paul Mashatile a speedy and full recovery.
