Deputy President Paul Mashatile has called on all stakeholders to work together to address the interconnected issues of gender transformation and economic transformation in a comprehensive and impactful manner. Speaking at the P20 Women’s Parliament in Cape Town, Mashatile emphasized that gender inequality can no longer be allowed to plague society and hold back the potential and contributions of women.
Mashatile stressed that policies, programs, and initiatives aimed at economic development must prioritize gender equality and transformation. He also highlighted the need to provide women with the tools, resources, skills, and opportunities they require to make their dreams a lived reality. “We must be persistent in advocating for legislative measures that will guarantee women-owned small, micro, and medium businesses access to working capital and inclusion in the mainstream economy,” he said.
Mashatile acknowledged the considerable progress made in gender equality and inclusive governance, citing the inclusion of women in leadership positions in government and the private sector. However, he noted that most sectors of the economy remain male-dominated, indicating that the ideals of the Freedom Charter have not been fully realized.
Mashatile emphasized that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but also essential for achieving sustainable development, promoting peace and security, and fostering a more just and inclusive society. He called on leaders to consider women’s needs and prioritize their empowerment to promote economic growth, reduce poverty, and foster a more just and equal society.
The Deputy President highlighted several government initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality, including the Employment Equity Act, Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, and the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act. He also noted that the government has launched the Technology Innovation Agency to empower women in technology and innovation.
Mashatile’s call to action emphasizes the need for a collective effort to achieve gender equality and economic growth. By working together, stakeholders can create a more just and inclusive society where women have equal opportunities to thrive. As the country continues to make progress in this area, it is essential to remain committed to the cause and ensure that gender equality remains a priority.
