Truth. Fearless. Unfiltered.
Thohoyandou, South Africa - In a powerful address at the Medico-Legal Workshop in Thohoyandou, Limpopo MEC for Health, Dieketseng Mashego, confronted the province's crippling medico-legal crisis head-on.
With 1 937 active cases and a staggering R13 billion contingent liability hanging over the department, Mashego left no room for excuses.
"Vhembe District remains the highest contributor to medico-legal cases in the province, with Tshilidzini Hospital accounting for a significant proportion of these claims," Mashego stated, her words echoing a call to action. "This reality demands honest introspection, decisive leadership, and urgent corrective action."
Mashego pulled no punches, pinpointing systemic challenges fueling the crisis: poor record-keeping, breakdowns in clinical governance, weak oversight, delayed responses to litigation, and unacceptable conduct. "Hospital CEOs must rise to the occasion," she emphasized. "Leadership at facility level is not ceremonial - it is operational and accountable."
The workshop, attended by top health officials, specialists, and nurse managers, was a turning point. Attendees collectively committed to strengthening governance, accountability, and quality of care to curb medico-legal risks.
Mashego's leadership shines through in her unwavering commitment to Limpopo's healthcare transformation. "Bophelo Pele" (Life First) is more than a slogan; it's a promise to deliver quality care, leaving no one behind.
