MAYOR MPE DELIVERS: 2KM ROAD FOR CHILDREN, R234M WATER FOR SESHEGO, HALL FOR NDUNA — NOT FOR ELECTIONS, FOR THE PEOPLE
"The children of any nation are its future" — Oliver Tambo | Mankgaile children get tar road to school, Seshego gets 10 million litres daily, Nduna gets hall for 200 people
MANKGAILE, POLOKWANE — The dust that used to cover the school shoes of Mankgaile Primary learners is being replaced by tar.
And the empty buckets that haunted Seshego for years are now filling with water.
That is what happened on Thursday 18 September when Polokwane Executive Mayor Cllr Makoro John Mpe, ANC Limpopo Deputy Provincial Chairperson, walked the 2km stretch from Mankgaile Primary School to the main road leading to Boyne, where yellow rollers, concrete culverts and drainage pipes now mark progress on the ground.
The community waited more than ten years for this road. On Thursday, Mayor Mpe proved he keeps his word. A promise made. Work underway.
He said he builds roads to schools because he believes what his icon taught him.
Oliver Tambo famously stated: "The children of any nation are its future. A country, a movement, a person that does not value its youth and children does not deserve its future."
The hardworking Mayor who practices what he preaches said that is why Polokwane invests in children — because children are the future.
But on Thursday, Mayor Mpe also addressed the lie that prophets of doom are spreading — that Polokwane is delivering because elections are on 4 November.
He said: These things are not being done because elections are on the 4th of November. These things have been there on his diary long before. These achievements were planned long ago.
You cannot plan a water treatment plant overnight. You cannot order facilities from overseas overnight.
And to prove it, The Azanian points to Seshego.
On 8 September, The Azanian reported: MPE DELIVERS: SESHEGO'S TAPS FLOW AGAIN AS MAYOR TURNS PROMISE INTO WATER.
The Seshego Water Treatment Plant — R234.156 million — now injects 8 to 10 million litres per day with a design capacity of 10 megalitres per day for 91,500 people in Seshego.
Construction began November 2019, practical completion June 2023, commissioned May 2024. It was funded by R202.155 million RBIG grant that Mayor Mpe lobbied and secured from national government, plus R32.001 million of Polokwane's own money.
Some of the equipment comes from overseas. You cannot import such facilities overnight for elections. This was planned long before.
Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina handed it over, with MEC Kgabo Mahoai representing the Premier, Deputy Ministers David Mahlobo and Dr Namane Dickson Masemola, and MEC Pule Shai present. But the man who built the road to that ribbon is Mayor Mpe.
In Mankgaile on Thursday, Mayor Mpe also urged residents to remain united and to refrain from listening to prophets of doom and desperate political parties who are divisive to the community using divide and rule just like the apartheid agents of destruction.
He then promised the Nduna a structure that will occupy about 200 people for community meetings, through partnership of stakeholders, contractors and private sector who have partnership with municipalities.
And he left the village laughing when he said: "I don't jog anymore because all what I do is to cut ribbons to open new structures that I promised the communities."
