Mbalula Calls on Ramaphosa to Act on Mkhwanazi's Claims: A Call for Accountability and Transparency

The African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, has urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to take immediate action in response to KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's "explosive" accusations of drug syndicates and political meddling.

Mbalula's call comes after Mkhwanazi made serious allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and deputy national police commissioner for crime detection Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya.

Mkhwanazi's allegations, which include claims that Mchunu and Sibiya have interfered in police investigations involving controversial tenderpreneur Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, have sparked a heated debate about the integrity of the criminal justice system. Mbalula said that the allegations border on lawlessness and project South Africa as a banana republic.

The ANC has taken Mkhwanazi's allegations seriously and has called on Ramaphosa to act with urgency. Mbalula said that the party reaffirms its commitment to accountability, non-interference in law enforcement, and the full protection of whistleblowers, investigators, and officers of the law.

In response to the allegations, Ramaphosa has called for discipline and restraint, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the country's security services and upholding the rule of law. The president has promised to outline the actions to be taken on this matter upon his return from the BRICS Leaders' Summit.

Mbalula's call for Ramaphosa to act on Mkhwanazi's claims is a call for accountability and transparency. The ANC's commitment to ensuring that the rule of law stands above any undue interference, intimidation, and abuse of power is a welcome move.
