Mbekezeli Mbokazi, the 19-year-old Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana defender, was named Man of the Match as South Africa held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Bloemfontein's Free State Stadium, keeping them tantalizingly close to securing a World Cup berth.

Mbokazi's standout performance underscores the bright prospects of Bafana Bafana, who remain top of Group C with 17 points and are just a touch away from qualifying for the prestigious tournament.

The match was a tense encounter, with Bafana Bafana taking an early lead when Nigeria's captain William Troost-Ekong scored an own goal in the 26th minute, courtesy of Mohau Nkota's well-placed cross. South Africa's dominance seemed poised to yield more goals, with Sipho Mbule living up to his creative reputation and Lyle Foster threatening Nigeria's goal.

But Nigeria fought back, and controversy swirled around their equalizer just before halftime when Calvin Bassey headed in what many deemed a contentious goal – there were clear indications of handball, but the absence of VAR meant the referee had no recourse but to allow the goal to stand. Many felt South Africa should have walked away with a 1-0 win, given the questionable nature of Nigeria's equalizer.

Mbokazi, showcasing his prowess for both Orlando Pirates and Bafana, was a commanding presence at the heart of Bafana's defense. The 19-year-old bullied markers with skill and physicality, showcasing poise beyond his years and cementing why he's seen as a rising star for South Africa. His emergence signals hope for Bafana's defensive solidity as they eye crucial qualification milestones.

Coach Hugo Broos believes the pressure is now on Nigeria, highlighting Bafana's strong position heading into their remaining qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda. "We have it in our hands," Broos emphasized, reflecting the team's confidence. A win in either of those upcoming matches could virtually seal South Africa's spot in the 2026 World Cup – a prospect thrilling fans who've long backed Bafana Bafana.

Nigeria, missing star striker Victor Osimhen due to injury, faces an uphill battle needing strong results to stay in contention, trailing South Africa by six points. Ola Aina's early injury substitution added to Nigeria's challenges. For Bafana Bafana, Mbokazi's man-of-the-match performance will hearten supporters dreaming of World Cup glory.
