Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Tonny Rachoene and Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa sealed a partnership to turbo‑charge provincial road maintenance, spotlighting the innovative #DikgerekgereWednesday programme and a fresh push for smarter use of the Provincial Roads Maintenance Grant (PRMG).
In a high‑energy bilateral held during October Transport Month, MEC Rachoene showcased how Limpopo is turning its rural character and strategic SADC‑gateway position into a road‑maintenance powerhouse. Sitting with Deputy Minister Hlengwa, the two leaders dissected the nuts‑and‑bolts of the Provincial Roads Maintenance Grant (PRMG) and charted a course for faster, more agile delivery.
MEC Rachoene highlighted Limpopo’s unique geography, stressing that the province’s rural nature demands innovative solutions. He proudly presented the department’s new #DikgerekgereWednesday blitz — a mid‑week drive to stretch PRMG funds beyond the baseline allocation, pushing projects forward with a “never‑stop” mindset. He also hinted at plans to expand the grant’s reach into yellow‑fleet procurement, aiming to bolster the province’s vehicle capacity for road‑works.
Deputy Minister Hlengwa lauded the #DikgerekgereWednesday initiative, calling it a “smart, on‑the‑ground approach that other provinces could learn from.” He underscored the need for tighter tender management to avoid bottlenecks, urging both spheres to “create agility in project implementation.” A firm agreement was reached for regular sync‑ups between national and provincial technical teams, ensuring the road network stays on track toward seamless connectivity for communities and the four SADC corridors.
A senior ANC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that Rachoene’s “hands‑on, no‑excuses style” has already sparked noticeable improvements in road conditions across the province. However, a civil‑society watchdog, while acknowledging progress, called for transparent monitoring of PRMG disbursements to guard against mismanagement.
“Limpopo’s rural terrain is our biggest challenge and our greatest opportunity. With #DikgerekgereWednesday we’re proving that innovation can stretch every rand for the people,” said Rachoene, MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure.
“We must turn the PRMG into a catalyst for sustainable road infrastructure, not just a band‑aid. Tightening tender processes and expanding yellow‑fleet procurement are steps in the right direction,” said Hlengwa, Deputy Minister of Transport.
