Mkhwanazi Slams Lesufi's Crime Prevention Wardens: A Threat to Law Enforcement?

During his testimony at the Ad Hoc Committee, KZN Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi expressed his disapproval of Premier Panyaza Lesufi's Crime Prevention Wardens, also known as AmaPanyaza.

Mkhwanazi's reservations centered on the wardens' status as Peace Officers, which he believes is a misguided move that could compromise law enforcement.

AmaPanyaza was established to fight crime, lawlessness, and vandalism in Gauteng, with 6,000 young people undergoing intensive training. However, their deployment has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that the wardens lack adequate training and are being used as a political tool.

ActionSA has presented evidence to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) against the wardens, citing concerns over their competence and the potential risks they pose to residents.

Meanwhile, Premier Panyaza Lesufi has expressed his willingness to cooperate with the commission of inquiry established to probe alleged political interference with police investigations. Lesufi said that if required, he would avail himself to ensure the commission leaves no stone unturned in its investigation.

The South African Parliament has taken decisive action to investigate police allegations, including Mkhwanazi's claims. A dedicated Ad Hoc Committee will be established to uphold justice and accountability in law enforcement.
