Mmakgomo Malatji Emulates Mama Winnie Mandela Through Her Foundation

Inspired by the late political icon Winnie Mandela known as the “Mother of the nation”, Mmakgomo Malatji from Namakgale in Phalaborwa at Limpopo has vowed to change the lives of the people without trepidation.

Her humility drove her to establish, Mmakgomo Malatji Foundation, which was initiated in 2020 with the purpose of emerging strategy that focuses on social industry to ensure the creation of public value and to add value to and better the lives of others.

“My mission is geared towards fighting poverty through my foundation. I was inspired by Mama Winnie Mandela who was a fearless politician who assisted many people during the apartheid regime. She stood firm against police brutality during the apartheid regime which subjected black communities to inhuman atrocities,” she said.

During the invisible dinosaur Covid-19 which claimed the lives of many worldwide, through her foundation, Mmakgomo took a decision to ease the burden of poverty in disadvantaged societies by donating sanitary towels, food parcels, clothing and necessary essential needs to displaced families who lack immediate relief.

In 2020, her foundation managed to distribute food parcels to 50 homes within Capricorn District and sanitary towel to 900 learners within Mopani District. In December 2021 and December 2024 Mmakgomo Malatji Foundation managed to spend Christmas day with the less fortunate to distribute Christmas clothing gifts to the less fortunate within Ba-Phalaborwa villages which are Makhushane, Mashishimale, Selwane, Lulekane and Namakgale.

She said: “The list of families who received the gifts was successfully compiled with the help of Social Workers working within Ba-Phalaborwa.”

The multi-talented Mmakgomo has a talk show programme known as “Step Up Talk With Mmakgomo” which gives a platform to future script writers. “The aim is to help individuals to nurture self-worth, to equip, and to inspire through information sharing, the educational viable platforms and networks and promoting individual empowerment,” she added.

Mmakgomo also has “Just One More Chapter Book Club” where she meets with her allies. She describes her book club as a journey of mental wellness and self-power alignment through the light from reading books, sharing wisdom and praying together.
