MPE TAKES SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE: Polokwane launches Rural Waste Collection to restore dignity

POLOKWANE —In a decisive move to close the urban-rural service gap, the City of Polokwane under the leadership of Executive Mayor, Cllr Makoro John Mpe, is taking essential services to where they are needed most.

The City will on 10 September 2026 officially launch the Reaga Polokwane Rural Waste Collection Programme at Jack Botes Hall at 10:00 — a people-centred intervention aimed at ensuring that every community, regardless of location, lives in a clean, healthy and dignified environment.

The programme, which falls under the City's Reaga Polokwane campaign, will see the rollout of scheduled waste collection services to rural communities that have historically been excluded from regular refuse removal.

For years, rural households in Polokwane have had to contend with illegal dumping and burning of waste due to lack of access. Under Mpe's leadership, that is now changing. "Every community deserves to live in a clean, healthy and dignified environment. Together, we build a cleaner Polokwane where no community is left behind," the City said in its announcement.

The launch marks yet another practical step by the Mpe-led administration in pushing a Naturally Progressive Polokwane that delivers for all — not just the suburbs and the CBD, but the villages and rural clusters as well.

Political observers say the move cements Mpe's reputation as a mayor focused on visible, grassroots service delivery rather than boardroom politics.

Executive Mayor Mpe is expected to outline the rollout plan, schedule and areas to be covered during the official launch.
