The Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure under the leadership of MEC Tonny Rachoene continues to accelerate service delivery in the province by ensuring that projects are completed in time.

The Azanian can confirm that the Department of Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure's Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) with the mining sector have yielded positive results in the Sekhukhune area.

MEC Rachoene said the partnership has enabled the delivery of critical infrastructure projects, such as the steel bridge at Ga-Malekana, which replaces the old one.

He also confirmed that the department's entity, the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL), has worked closely with eight mines to implement the project, demonstrating the value of collaboration between the public and private sectors.

The project has brought relief to the business community, motorists, and local communities, likely improving transportation, economic activity, and overall quality of life. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen internal capacity, promote growth, and ensure inclusivity in Limpopo.

The Steel Bridge at Ga-Malekana in Sekhukhune is a significant infrastructure project that's nearing completion. The new double-lane bridge is being built adjacent to the historic single-lane steel bridge from 1914, which will be refurbished and repurposed for pedestrian use. The project is valued at R117 million and is a collaborative effort between the Department of Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure, Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL), and eight mining companies operating in the area.

The bridge is situated on road D2219, linking to the R555 T-junction in Ga-Malekana village under the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality.

As of January 2025, the project was 80% complete, with the new bridge expected to be finalized soon.

The new bridge will feature special horn-shaped designs, adding an aesthetic element to the area's landscape.

The upgraded bridge promises improved driving conditions and enhanced safety for motorists, benefiting residents and commuters traveling between Burgersfort, Steelpoort, Groblersdal, Malekana, Jane Furse, and surrounding areas.

The Department of Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure plans to rehabilitate the 33.83 km stretch of road leading to the bridge, which has deteriorated due to heavy rainfall, in the upcoming financial year.
