Orlando Pirates FC kicked off their CAF Champions League campaign with a resounding 3-0 victory over Lioli FC at the Free State Stadium on Saturday.
Tshegofatso Mabasa stole the show with a second-half brace, while Oswin Appollis sealed the win with a last-minute goal.
The match was a tale of two halves, with the first 45 minutes ending goalless despite several scoring opportunities. Thabiso Lebitso had a shot saved by Lioli goalkeeper William Huni early in the game, while Appollis missed a golden chance to open the scoring.
The Pirates' dominance paid off in the second half when Mabasa headed home a well-crafted corner kick from Deon Hotto in the 53rd minute. Just four minutes later, Mabasa doubled the lead with a low shot inside the 18-yard box, courtesy of an assist from Relebohile Mofokeng.
Appollis put the icing on the cake with a last-minute goal, capping off a convincing win for the Pirates. This victory sets the stage for the second leg, scheduled for Saturday, September 27, at the Orlando Stadium.
