Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
A heated battle is brewing between KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, with several political parties rallying behind Mkhwanazi and calling for Mchunu's immediate suspension.
Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations against Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, accusing them of interfering with a high-profile task team investigating political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mkhwanazi claims that Mchunu and Sibiya ordered the disbandment of the task team and withdrew case dockets, hindering investigations into political killings and organized crime. He alleges that the task team had made significant progress, including the arrest of 436 suspects and the recovery of 156 firearms, 55 of which were linked to politically related cases.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for Mchunu's immediate suspension and an urgent parliamentary inquiry into the allegations. The party praises Mkhwanazi for his bravery in speaking out and demands accountability from all parties involved. Rise Mzansi and ActionSA have also expressed concern over the allegations, with Rise Mzansi's Makashule Gana stating that the allegations cannot be left to fester and that President Cyril Ramaphosa and national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola must urgently inform the nation about what they know regarding the allegations.
The MK Party has come out in support of Mkhwanazi, commending him for his actions and calling on him to lay criminal charges against Mchunu and Sibiya within the next 24 hours for defeating the ends of justice. The party demands the immediate arrest of Mchunu, citing prima facie evidence of criminal conduct.
The African National Congress (ANC) has assured that Ramaphosa is attending to the allegations raised by Mkhwanazi with the urgency and seriousness deserved. The party notes with great concern the issues raised by Mkhwanazi and reaffirms its commitment to accountability, justice, and the protection of all South Africans under the law.
