POLOKWANE – Executive Mayor Cllr John Mpe cemented his reputation as a champion of compassionate governance today as Polokwane Municipality celebrated the official opening of Netcare Akeso Polokwane, the city’s first dedicated psychiatric hospital.
Addressing a packed audience at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mpe delivered the official welcome remarks, framing the moment as more than bricks and mortar. “In a world where the silent battles of the mind often go unseen, this is a bold and compassionate stride towards accessible, specialised mental health care for our communities,” Mpe said. “Today we are not just opening doors; we are opening possibilities.”
Limpopo MEC for Health Dieketseng Mashego and Capricorn District Municipality Executive Mayor Mamedupi Teffo were also present during the ceremony.
The newly elected ANC Limpopo Deputy Chairperson, who secured his position at the party’s 11th elective conference in Polokwane, used the platform to underscore the City of Stars’ commitment to human-centred development. Under his leadership, Polokwane has pursued partnerships that blend public vision with private investment to deliver critical infrastructure, and Netcare Akeso stands as the latest proof point.
For Mpe, the hospital represents a promise kept to residents long underserved by specialised mental health services. “This is the planting of a sanctuary where lives will be restored, families strengthened, and futures reclaimed,” he told delegates, setting a tone of hope and accountability.
Since taking office, the Polokwane Mayor has pushed a service-delivery agenda that pairs economic growth with social care. Today’s milestone adds healthcare to a list of wins that includes infrastructure upgrades, youth programmes, and investment drives aimed at positioning Polokwane as Limpopo’s leading metro.
Colleagues credit Mpe’s steady hand and political maturity – attributes that saw ANC Limpopo delegates elect him Deputy Chairperson – for unlocking collaboration between the municipality and major private healthcare providers. The result: residents will no longer need to travel vast distances for psychiatric care.
The opening of Netcare Akeso Polokwane signals a shift in how the city approaches wellness. With mental health challenges on the rise nationally, Mpe positioned Polokwane ahead of the curve by prioritising access, dignity, and specialised treatment close to home.
“Leadership is about seeing the battles people fight in silence and responding with action,” Mpe said. “This facility says to every resident: you are seen, you matter, and your city is with you.”
As ANC Deputy Chairperson in Limpopo and Executive Mayor of its capital, Cllr John Mpe is drawing a clear line between politics and people. Tuesday’s launch was not just ceremonial. It was a statement of intent from a mayor determined to make Polokwane a city that builds, heals, and includes.
Indeed, today Polokwane did not just open a hospital. It opened a new chapter, with Mayor Mpe holding the pen.The Azanian will monitor the situation and provide updates as they develop.
