MARULENG — Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Tonny Rachoene took government to the people on Monday, leading a high-level inspection of the D21 road rehabilitation project in Maruleng as part of the department’s #ProjectMonitoring programme.
Rachoene was joined by Maruleng Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Tsheko Musolwa and the mayoral Project Management Team as they walked the site, engaged contractors, and checked construction milestones on the critical D21 route that connects rural communities in the Mopani District.
The site visit forms part of the Seventh Administration’s #DikgerekgereWednesdays service delivery drive, championed by Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, to fast-track infrastructure delivery across Limpopo.
“This is government in action,” Rachoene told community members who gathered at the site. “We are not monitoring projects from boardrooms in Polokwane. We are here on the ground with the Mayor and his team to see the work, to check the quality, and to ensure that the people of Maruleng get the road they were promised.”
The D21 rehabilitation is a key priority for the department, unlocking economic activity and easing transport for farmers, learners, and local businesses who rely on the route daily.
Mayor Musolwa welcomed the MEC’s hands-on approach. “When the MEC comes to Maruleng himself to inspect D21, it shows that the Seventh Administration is serious about rural infrastructure. Our communities have waited for this road. Today they see progress, and they see that government is listening.”
Rachoene said the #ProjectMonitoring programme will be rolled out to all districts to ensure contractors deliver on time and on budget. “Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has given us a clear mandate: dikgerekgere must move. Roads must be built. Bridges must be fixed. And the people of Limpopo must feel the Seventh Administration in their daily lives.”
Construction teams briefed the MEC on progress, challenges, and timelines. Rachoene instructed officials to submit weekly reports and warned that underperformance would not be tolerated.
The MEC committed to returning to Maruleng unannounced to verify continued progress. “This is not a once-off photo opportunity. We will be back. The people of Mopani deserve a government that monitors, delivers, and accounts.”
The D21 project is one of several road upgrades underway in Mopani as the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure accelerates delivery under the Seventh Administration.
The Azanian will continue tracking #DikgerekgereWednesdays across Limpopo.
