Limpopo, South Africa - In the face of devastating floods that have claimed over 10 lives and left a trail of destruction, Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Tonny Rachoene is demonstrating unwavering commitment to restoring normalcy.
Rachoene's prompt action in visiting flood-affected areas in Vhembe District, including the D3864 Nghezimani road outside Malamulele, showcases his dedication to serving the people.
The road, which was severely damaged by the floods, has been temporarily repaired by Rachoene's team, #DikgerekgereWednesdays, allowing communities to access basic amenities. "Communities will now be able to pass and go to other areas to get basic amenities," Rachoene said, commending his team's swift response.
This move comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa's visit to the flood-stricken areas, where he described the scale of devastation as "catastrophic". Ramaphosa emphasized the need for urgent action to address the impact of climate change, stating, "We are told that we can expect more rain, and this is the effect of climate change. Climate change is truly with us".
Rachoene's leadership is a testament to the government's commitment to supporting vulnerable communities. The declaration of the province as disaster-struck will fast-track interventions in badly affected areas. "The persistent flooding makes it difficult for the department's yellow fleet (Dikgerekgere) to move in to start with repairs of damaged roads," Rachoene said, highlighting the challenges faced by his team.
The floods have caused widespread destruction, with at least 36 houses washed away in Mopani District and several bridges swept away. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and emergency services have been deployed to assist with search and rescue operations.
As Rachoene continues to work tirelessly to restore infrastructure, the people of Limpopo are showing remarkable resilience. "The solidarity and cooperation that we have seen amongst our people is quite amazing," Ramaphosa said, praising the community's spirit.
