POLOKWANE — She is known for not sugarcoating, for calling a spade a spade, for hitting where it matters and leaving the crowd thinking — and once again, Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba did exactly that.
She left the crowd in stitches when she spoke about Louis Vuitton and Gucci.
Speaking at the media launch of the 2026 Limpopo Championship Golf Tournament at The Ranch Hotel in Polokwane on 09 September 2026, the Premier delivered a straight-talking message that had everyone laughing and applauding at the same time, while also delivering a serious economic and anti-crime message.
Flanked by Limpopo Tourism Agency Board Chairperson Mr Freddy Greaver and tourism stakeholders, the Premier was there to throw her full support behind the Limpopo Championship as a key driver for sports tourism, investment and job creation.
She said tournaments like the Limpopo Championship are more than just golf. They are about jobs, about tourism, about bringing investors into the province and about giving young people opportunities.
In a strong and direct address, the Premier urged the Limpopo community to treat visitors with humility and respect, saying that our hospitality is our biggest tourism product. When visitors feel respected and welcomed, they come back and they bring investment.
She also made a firm commitment that her government will continue to create jobs as a strategy to curb crime in the province. She said most people who commit crime do so because they are not employed. When people are not employed, they can at times resort to crime as a means of survival. She said when people are employed, crime is reduced.
She added that there are, however, those who have a criminal mentality, people who are suffering from kleptomania and other conditions, who need psychiatric evaluation. Those who are just criminals by mentality need professional help, but for the majority, employment is the solution.
That is why, she said, it is important that there must be job creation. Her administration is already doing that and will continue to fight and ensure that more people are employed, especially young people.
She also spoke passionately about opportunities for entrepreneurs. She said opportunities must be created for young business people and business people in general, because young people are the future of tomorrow. When businesses are empowered — both young entrepreneurs and established entrepreneurs — the economy grows. This is even more critical in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution where young entrepreneurs must be at the forefront.
Premier Ramathuba told the province to remain humble even as it grows and attracts investment.
She further urged more investors to come to Limpopo to boost the economy of the province, including through major sports tournaments like the Limpopo Championship.
And then she dropped the line that everyone is now talking about and that left the crowd in stitches.
Urging people not to judge others by how they dress, the Premier said sometimes the person who is not wearing expensive clothing such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci is the one who is a CEO and a good investor.
She shared that she recently went to church and sat next to a person who was dressed very simply, not in expensive labels, only to be told afterwards that the person has a lot of money and wealth.
"I today confirm I will not buy Louis Vuitton and Gucci clothing... People with money don't wear Louis Vuitton and Gucci... but people without money do wear... I think at times such things are a scam," she said, as the crowd burst into laughter and applause.
Beyond the humour, she promoted the upcoming Charity Golf Day on 11 September 2026 at 10h00 at Euphoria Golf Estate under the theme "Tee Off For A Cause. Giving Back. Changing Lives" in partnership with Lepelle Northern Water.
It was a complete address — jobs, crime, humility, respect, investment, youth entrepreneurship and a viral truth bomb about Louis Vuitton and Gucci that has Limpopo talking.
