The hammer came down hard. Friday afternoon, Special Investigating Unit agents, a court-appointed Curator, and SAPS officers smashed through the gates of Omar’s Motor Den and drove out with a R3 million Bentley — the flashy trophy allegedly bought with money meant for Tembisa Hospital patients.
It was a raid built on defiance.
The SIU had already won two Special Tribunal orders. One gave them the green light to seize the luxury car linked to alleged tender fraudster Hangwani Maumela.
The second declared Omar’s Motor Den in contempt for trying to sell the vehicle while it was under court restraint.
The dealership didn’t comply. It tried to move the money anyway.
SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho said investigators found evidence of an attempted sale and “an ongoing flow of value away from the restrained estate”. The Bentley never left the showroom floor, but Makgotho said the paper trail showed someone was trying to make it disappear.
“The Tribunal’s order ensures that the Curator Bonis can secure the vehicle, obtain full documentation, and prevent further dealings until the matter is finally determined,” Makgotho said.
When SIU and SAPS demanded access, dealership owner Yusuf Omar refused to cooperate. He was arrested on the spot for contempt of court. Doors that wouldn’t open were forced. The Bentley was driven out under seizure.
That Bentley didn’t buy itself. The SIU says it’s tied to Hangwani Maumela and the web of inflated contracts that bled Tembisa Hospital dry while wards went without basics. Every chrome detail, every leather stitch, allegedly paid for with money meant for medicine, equipment, and nurses.
Friday’s raid proves the chase is real. Assets don’t hide forever. Luxury cars bought with stolen public money are being hunted, tracked, and ripped from the hands of those who thought court orders were suggestions.
