SESHENGO, POLOKWANE — There are birthdays that are counted in years. And there are birthdays that are counted in impact.
Recently, at Phologo Drop-In Centre in Seshego Zone 1, Hospital View, Limpopo witnessed the second kind.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, the first female Premier of the province and the first female Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress in Limpopo, chose not to celebrate her birthday behind closed doors, under chandeliers and speeches.
She chose the children. She chose Phologo. She chose hope.
And standing firmly beside her, as a comrade, a colleague and a co-servant of the people, was the Executive Mayor of Polokwane Municipality, Cllr Makoro John Mpe — the Mayor of the Capital City and the Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the ANC in Limpopo.
Some birthdays are marked by candles, cakes and grand halls. Others are measured in the smiles of children, the warmth of a hand held, and the quiet joy of giving. Today belonged to the latter.
The atmosphere at Phologo was electric with joy. Children sang. Community members ululated. Caregivers smiled with gratitude. In the centre of it all was the Premier, laughing freely, embracing the children whose bright eyes became the brightest candles of the day.
Mayor Mpe, known for his grounded and people-centred approach to governance, joined the Premier in supporting this special occasion, sharing in the laughter, warmth and hope that filled the centre.
His presence was more than ceremonial — it was a statement of alignment between the Provincial Government and the City of Polokwane, between the Chairperson and her Deputy, between two leaders who understand that service is best rendered together.
This is what leadership looks like when it is anchored in ubuntu.

Premier Ramathuba has never hidden her calling. As a medical doctor, she spent years healing bodies in hospitals. As Premier, she now heals communities with policy, compassion and presence.
Her decision to celebrate her birthday at a Drop-In Centre for vulnerable children speaks to that consistency of character. It says: I have not forgotten where I come from, and I have not forgotten who I serve.
Mayor John Mpe, on the other hand, continues to cement his reputation as a Mayor who is present. Not a Mayor of press statements and podiums, but a Mayor of the streets, the zones, the drop-in centres and the people.
As Deputy Provincial Chairperson, his support for the Chairperson today was both political and deeply personal — a demonstration of unity at the top that filters down into stable, focused governance for the province.
Children at Phologo Drop-In Centre in Seshego Zone 1, Hospital View, celebrate Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba’s birthday with songs and joy, joined by Executive Mayor Cllr John Makoro Mpe.
Together, they embody the renewal and unity the ANC in Limpopo has been preaching. A female Chairperson breaking glass ceilings, and a Deputy who supports, reinforces and builds. A Premier who governs the whole province with a healing hand, and a Mayor who holds the capital city with steady, progressive leadership.
In a time when many leaders choose spectacle, they chose service. In a time when many chase headlines, they chose humility.
And the children felt it. The community felt it. Limpopo felt it.
Because, in the final analysis, the finest birthday gift is not what one receives, but what one gives.
And recently in the company of children, the Premier’s birthday became more than a celebration. It became a sermon — a living reminder that when leaders stand together for the people, when Chairperson and Deputy work side by side, when Province and Municipality walk hand in hand, hope finds a home.
Happy birthday, Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba. May the joy, love and compassion you shared today at Phologo return to you a thousandfold. Limpopo is blessed to have you.
And thank you to Executive Mayor Cllr Makoro John Mpe for showing us, once again, that Polokwane is in caring, capable hands.
