LEBOWAKGOMO– The ANC-led Limpopo Legislature is teetering on the edge. In just over a week, the house meant to oversee government spending has been rocked by suspension, allegations of looting, and now claims of a break-in designed to bury evidence.

On Wednesday, 1 July 2026, Speaker Dr Makoma Makhurupetja placed Legislature Secretary Dr Timothy Matshakutu Maake on immediate precautionary suspension. The move followed weeks of pressure from NEHAWU in Limpopo, which had written to the Speaker demanding an urgent investigation into what the union called “the looting of the legislature budget under her nose through law firms.”

NEHAWU did not mince its words. The union said if the allegations are proven true, the conduct of the Secretary has “severely compromised the integrity of the provincial law-making body.” They reminded the Speaker that a Secretary must create public trust and that every decision must be made in the public interest, without regard to personal or financial benefit.

At the heart of the matter are millions of rands now under question. NEHAWU alleges that nearly R3.8 million was spent on conference payments during an ANC provincial conference. Another R1.5 million is said to have been paid out twice for the same services. The union also flagged irregular budget shifts amounting to R7 million, payments of R63 000 to law firms that had already been terminated by the legislature, and what it described as ghost invoices for work that was never performed.

That brings the total to over R12.3 million in direct allegations, not counting the unknown amounts linked to services that were allegedly never delivered. Dr Isaac Nkuna has since been appointed as Acting Secretary while an independent investigation gets underway.

But the crisis did not end with the suspension. On Friday, the DA revealed that there had been an alleged break-in at the Speaker’s office in Lebowakgomo on 8 July 2026. Adv Franco Marx MPL, the DA’s Provincial Spokesperson on Legislature Oversight, says the incident took place at a national key point with upgraded security, SAPS members, smart doors and surveillance. Yet somehow, he said, it went undetected while it was happening.

Marx called the timing “dubious” because it happened just days before a secretive forensic report was due to be presented to the Oversight Portfolio Committee. He argued that it is “indicative of the Speaker’s involvement in alleged maladministration.”

The DA also reminded the public of other controversies that have dogged the Speaker’s tenure. These include the purchase and alleged subsequent sale of the Speaker’s vehicle, R1.8 million spent on cancelled plane tickets and accommodation, and a R5 million payment to Talane and Associates, a law firm with alleged family ties to Dr Maake.

“We will not allow the People’s House to deteriorate into a looting opportunity for shifty bureaucrats and unscrupulous cadres,” Marx said. The DA is now demanding the urgent establishment of an Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the malpractice that occurred under both the Speaker and the Secretary.

The Oversight Portfolio Committee is scheduled to meet on 15 July 2026 to receive a report on the alleged break-in. Until then, the people of Limpopo are left with more questions than answers. From conference spending to ghost invoices, and now to a break-in, the Limpopo Legislature has reached what many are calling its point of no return.
