Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has expressed reservations about KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's decision to wear military regalia during a media briefing where he made explosive allegations about criminal syndicates infiltrating law enforcement.

Cachalia told parliament's ad hoc committee investigating Mkhwanazi's allegations that he was "worried" by the police commissioner's appearance in military attire and armed during the briefing. "That kind of public statement was not in the ordinary situation because the police have a command structure. Ordinarily, professional conduct requires respect for that structure of authority," Cachalia said.

Despite his concerns about Mkhwanazi's approach, Cachalia acknowledged that if the allegations are proven true, the police commissioner would be vindicated as a whistleblower. "When senior officers who are ordinarily expected to adhere to those [channels], where extreme situations arise and those norms are not working, to achieve the results the public expects bold, courageous conduct by those who hold important positions in our society to tell the truth," Cachalia said.

Cachalia emphasized that he will reserve final judgment until the investigation is complete, noting that the testimonies presented so far have been "alarming and concerning." The inquiry aims to uncover the truth behind Mkhwanazi's allegations and determine the appropriate course of action.
