Truth. Fearless. Unfiltered.
In a shocking exposé, The Azanian reveals the dark underbelly of Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality, where top officials are embroiled in a R43.5 million blame game.
Acting municipal manager Minky Chauke and mayor Meriam Molala are pointing fingers at their own audit team, sparking a fierce battle that threatens to consume them.
The Auditor-General’s scathing report has laid bare the municipality’s dirty laundry, revealing a litany of failures, including unauthorized spending, material misstatements, and a blatant disregard for supply chain management regulations.
But instead of taking responsibility, Chauke and Molala have opted to shoot the messenger, suspending senior audit officials Rampuru Setati and Maloma Isaya.
Sources close to the matter reveal that the irregular expenditure was flagged by the Auditor-General’s office, highlighting concerns about financial management and governance.
But Chauke’s letter to Setati alleges gross misconduct and negligence, claiming she failed to conduct oversight audits and advise on procurement process integrity.
“This is a clear case of shooting the messenger,” said a senior official. “The mayor and Chauke are trying to shift the blame to the audit team.” Setati has hit back, demanding documentation to defend herself against the allegations. “This is a malicious attempt to undermine my integrity,” she said. “I will fight these allegations with all I have.”
The municipal executive committee has directed the mayor to investigate the audit process, but many are questioning the legitimacy of the process. “This is just a witch-hunt,” said a local councilor. “We need an independent investigation to get to the bottom of this scandal.”
As the scandal unfolds, residents are demanding accountability. “We want answers,” said local resident, Thembi Nkosi. “Who is responsible for this mess, and what will happen to them?”
The Azanian’s investigation reveals a disturbing trend of blame-shifting and attempts to silence whistleblowers.
“It’s a culture of fear and intimidation,” said a former employee. “We were told to keep quiet or face the consequences.”
The Azanian is calling for an independent investigation into the allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption at Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality.
The people of Lepelle-Nkumpi deserve better. It’s time for transparency and accountability in local government.
